Indian HIV prevention experts encouraged to collaborate with police: LEAHN

LEAHN Coordinator Greg Denham stressed the importance of police support for effective harm reduction services for people who inject drugs at a special seminar in Melbourne on the 15th of May, 2014. A senior delegation of HIV prevention and harm reduction experts were undertaking a training program at Melbourne University’s Nossal Institute for Global Health. Dr Neeraj Dhingra, Deputy Director of India’s National AIDS Control Organisation, participated in the training along with several colleagues and representatives from NGOs, UNAIDS and programs and support groups for people who inject drugs.

Greg highlighted LEAHN’s philosophy of working in partnership with police (although difficult) so as to ensure greater access to services for clients which may otherwise be compromised by drug law enforcement activities.

Participants were encouraged to join the LEAH Network to learn more about the benefits of collaborating with police.
