LEAHN supports new HIV Training Curriculum for police in Ghana

 

In June 2014, the Ghana Police Service adopted the new pre-service HIV Training Curriculum at a short ceremony held at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

Ghana June 2014 2The occasion saw the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Angela El Adas, officially presenting the document to the Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service, Mr. Mohamd Ahmed Alhassan, at the Police Headquarters. Dr El Adas used the occassion to congratulate the police administration for adopting a rights-based approach to policing in Ghana where the rights of key and vulnerable populations must be respected. She indicated that topics that are very relevant to policing in these contemporary times have been addressed in the curriculum with the intention that all police personnel would be informed about such emerging issues such as:

-Building police/ community response mechanisms
-Gender-based violence
-Stigma and discrimination especially towards key affected populations
– Human rights, key populations and HIV
– The role of the police in working with key populations.

Ghana June 2014 4The Inspector General thanked the USAID/PEPFAR for their financial support and Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs and USAID/SHARPER Project for their technical support in the development of the document. Meanwhile 24 class instructors from the 7 Police Training Schools throughout the country have received a TOT on the use of the manual which
also includes a documentary on Abuses of Sex Workers in Ghana by the Police.
