LEAHN’s Gulsara Alieva calls on police to stop violence against women who use drugs

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25)  Gulsara Alieva,  retired police colonel, calls her colleagues – law enforcement representatives – to stop police violence against women who use drugs

Dear colleagues,

Мy name is Gulsara Alieva. I am a retired police colonel and a member of the Law Enforcement and HIV Network. On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that, unfortunately, there are violence cases involving law enforcement as well, such as violence against vulnerable populations. There are examples of forced HIV testing or frivolous arrests of women using drugs. In this regard, I urge you all to express a decided “NO” to this malpractice.

This video was produced as part of the regional campaign “Women against violence” by EHRN in partnership with the campaign partners from Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine. Other campaign partners will also join commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. On this day,  a worldwide campaign called  “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence” starts,  and it will last until the Human Rights Day, i.e. December 10. Joining the two weeks and two days of Activism against Gender Violence, the “Women against Violence” (WAV) campaign partners from Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Ukraine will organize round table discussions with law enforcement representatives and other community stakeholders to raise awareness about police violence against women who use drugs as well as to discuss possible solutions and cooperation opportunities to combat it.
