LEAHN Regional Co-ordinator for Central Asia, Alex Zelitchenko has had a busy December working harm to promote the importance of law enforcement in the HIV response.
On December 04, 2014 Alex attended a Project close-out round table «Technical support of the Ministry of Interior for implementation of the departmental plan of police personnel training in addressing the HIV-related problems, and Harm Reduction issues», and made a presentation including a brief overview of Law Enforcement and HIV Network (See the Powerpoint presentation here – in Russian)
On December 8-9, 2014 in Almaty, Kazakhstan he held a two-days’ workshop “Enhancing Partnerships Between Law Enforcement and Civil Society Organizations in the context of Drug Use and HIV”, using the HIV Prevention Training Manual for Law Enforcement Agencies, tailored to the to the local situations of the assigned high priority countries for UNODC.
After the workshop Alex was awarded with a Kazakh Police Academy Service Certificate “For outstanding achievements in the field of police training”. A well deserved award after many years of dedication to increasing police support for harm reduction.
In addition, he was elected to the Steering Committee for the Kyrgyz Penitentiary Service Reform. On December 17, 2014 he participated in a scheduled meeting of the Committee which mainly focused on the situation of prisoners sentenced to life in prison.
